Adjusting the picture - a producers guide to disability
There are 8.7 million disabled people in Britain. One in four people listening to or watching your programme is either disabled or close to someone who is.
This is a part of your audience you cannot afford to ignore. Yet disabled people are seriously under-represented in the broadcasting workforce, on-air and on-screen. That is why we have called this guide Adjusting the Picture.
The guide is designed to help you, as radio and television producers, work with disabled people as colleagues, contributors and as members of your audience. It is intended for all producers - including those of you who work in ‘mainstream' programme areas, from news to light entertainment and from drama to documentary. It is not just for producers working on specialist disability output. Much of the guide is also relevant to commissioning editors, human resource managers, and staff working directly with listeners and viewers.
We hope that you will enjoy reading the guide and that you will keep and use it for reference on some of the practicalities and legalities involved, and to point you in the direction of specialist help.
