Report: Broadcast industry's disabled employees increase in number

24th August 2010

statistics

The broadcast sector saw its total number of disabled employees rise in the year 2008-9, new figures show.

A report published by the Broadcast Equality & Training Regulator (BETR) found there to be 1,478 employees with declared disabilities during this period - up by 38 from the previous year.

Within the industry, there is a higher representation of disabled individuals working in television (2.6 per cent overall) than radio (0.5 per cent).

At board level, the proportion of members with declared disabilities went up from one per cent to three per cent.

However, BETR said it would make recommendations regarding the 12.2 per cent of the total broadcast workforce which did not state whether or not they have a disability.

"It is notable that 16 companies have no information on disability within their workforce ... 44 companies report that they have no employees who have declared a disability. This is a matter of concern," it added.

The body works with Ofcom to ensure that the broadcast industry provides appropriate and adequate training and skills.
