Swindon social enterprise helps people with mental health conditions find work

10th August 2010

Phoenix Enterprises, a social enterprise based at Cheney Manor Industrial Estate in Swindon, is helping people with mental health conditions get back into the workplace.

A mail order and assembly company, the service has improved the economic inclusion of its volunteers and part-time staff, one of whom is Michael Hamilton of Walcot, the Swindon Advertiser reports.

The 55-year-old has been experiencing severe depression since his partner of 29 years died in 2000 but, after joining the facility three years ago, he is now working as a health and safety officer.

"They treated me as one of the members of Phoenix and that gave me confidence in order to learn and train," he remarked, noting that he used to self-harm and experienced audio hallucinations, which led to him being sectioned.

It comes after Dr Clive Morgan told Wales Online that flexible working hours could help people with mental health conditions remain in jobs as later starting times could accommodate medical appointments and improve recovery.ADNFCR-1716-ID-800019257-ADNFCR
