Equality Act advice offered to employers

Businesses in the UK have been advised by a lawyer at Aberdein Considine to ensure that they review their barrier-free policies and procedures in terms of the new prohibitions and definitions in anti-discrimination law which comprise part of the forthcoming Equality Act.
In an article for the Press and Journal, Sally-Anne Ogilvie explained that taking such action would make sure that companies are in the "best possible position" when the ruling is introduced in October.
She also recommended that firms re-assess recruitment and application form processes in order to guarantee they promote equality and are in compliance with pre-employment health questionnaires.
Furthermore, it was suggested that all personnel are educated regarding the amended content of discrimination and equality principles.
"We would encourage all employers - regardless of the size of the organisation - to prepare for the first wave of implementation," Ms Ogilvie remarked.
In addition, corporations may find new guidance regarding the legislation from the Equality and Human Rights Commission useful, as it focuses on employment as well as public functions and services.
