Firms advised to consult about disabled access

Companies 'should consult about disabled access'

Employers in the UK should ensure that their premises meet health and safety standards such as disabled access for staff members, customers and clients.

This is according to Rollaramp, which has suggested firms consult with disabled people before implementing measures that are intended to make buildings "more welcoming and comfortable".

In a series of recommendations made to businesses of all sizes, the company claimed all the needs and requirements of those with disabilities should be met in relation to access in and out of sites and equipment that may be required.

In addition to speaking with disabled people, enterprises should also examine the rules and regulations in a local area and address any questions to councils in order to ensure the correct improvements are made, it stated.

Specific advice given included reasonable adjustments such as leaving wide aisles and doorways for wheelchair access, installing grab bars in a building and considering how items are placed within spaces.

Meanwhile, bosses may also be interested in new guidance published by the Equality and Human Rights Commission on the UN Convention on the Rights of Disabled Persons in order to enhance disability confidence across a range of areas, including employment.ADNFCR-1716-ID-19907226-ADNFCR
