New EHRC guide aims to boost disability confidence

22nd July 2010

The guidance aims to improve awareness

Guidance on the UN Convention on the Rights of Disabled Persons and how this can be used has been published by the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC).

It aims to boost disability confidence by including details on all of the responsibilities of organisations and services, therefore helping people to "challenge injustices".

Covered in the guide are rights relating to areas such as employment, personal security, education and health.

Removing barriers and providing freedom and dignity is something the government needs to take action and this document will make sure that happens, says Mike Smith, chair of the commission's disability committee.

"The more people who know what the convention says, the more likely it is that disabled people will be treated fairly," he added.

Earlier this month, the EHRC discussed the results of a recent survey by the Professional Associations Research network, which found that a commitment to diversity and equality among various organisations was now more mainstream and widely adopted.ADNFCR-1716-ID-19904006-ADNFCR
