Wirral initiative helps disabled man secure training
12th March 2010

A scheme financed by Wirral Borough Council has helped one disabled man to land a grant to aid him in securing a new job.
Former heavy-goods vehicle (HGV) driver John Davies, who has a lower back injury, is looking to become a Class 1 HGV instructor and obtained money to finance his training through the Linking Wirral People into Employment initiative.
The venture is being delivered by Remploy - an organisation aimed at promoting barrier-free recruitment procedures - as well as the Social Partnership and Community Action Wirral.
"My disability meant I had to resign from my previous driving job," he remarked. "It became increasingly clear I would not be able to take to the road again as a full-time driver."
However, according to Mr Davies, teaching others how to be a part of the industry is what he wants to accomplish now that he is unable to get behind the wheel himself.
