Autism initiative welcomed by charity

A new strategy regarding autism services in Britain has been welcomed by one charity.

The UK Autism Foundation (UKAF) stated that the initiative, which will see more training given to Jobcentre staff for helping people with the condition secure employment, has been a long time coming.

"We have been calling for a strategy for several years and we welcome what is definitely a step in the right direction - where autism is concerned," the organisation explained.

It quoted Professor Simon Baron-Cohen, director of Cambridge University's Autism Research Centre, who recently claimed that the programme will ensure "invisible and marginalised" people will be given more assistance.

Announced by health minister Phil Hope earlier this month, the Fulfilling and Rewarding Lives scheme will also aim to make reasonable adjustments to public buildings to ensure they are accessible for those with autism.

Ivan Corea of the UKAF this week wrote to the three major political parties to urge them to highlight the requirements of disabled individuals in televised debates for the general election.ADNFCR-1716-ID-19661858-ADNFCR
