Employers 'should be aware of mental health in the workplace'

Supervisors need to be aware of the mental and physical health of their staff members in the current economic climate, one expert has suggested.

Dr Clare Kelliher of the Cranfield School of Management stated that a recent report showing worker discontent in Britain highlights the problems facing some firms.

The survey by Simplyhealth showed that half of individuals are unhappy with the way their bosses have dealt with the wellbeing of personnel.

Some 47 per cent of managers also admitted that stress was running high due to fears over job losses.

However, Dr Kelliher commented that employers can remedy circumstances such as these through good practices.

"Treating people with dignity and respect goes a long way to [fostering] similar behaviours in return," she remarked.

It is also important that employees are kept informed about how the future of the company looks, the specialist explained, as well as ensuring that strong procedures are in place to deal with people fairly should redundancies have to be made.ADNFCR-1716-ID-19661040-ADNFCR
