Dyslexic woman praises LSC

5th February 2010

Michelle Douglas - who has dyslexia - has praised the work of the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) for helping her to develop her literacy.

The 38-year-old said she struggled at school and often found teachers to be unsupportive and demeaning.

She remarked: "I had one teacher who told me I was thick in front of the whole class - things like that really stay with you."

However, Ms Douglas said that after enrolling on the LSC's Skills for Life scheme she had "an absolute breakthrough".

The teacher was able to judge the best way of explaining things, she stated.

Having passed Level 2 of Adult Literacy, Ms Douglas is now hoping to achieve a GCSE in English so that she can work in the arts department of a secondary school.

In October, dyslexic man Edward Vickerman won the gold plato accolade for outstanding new teacher at a national awards ceremony in London.ADNFCR-1716-ID-19601081-ADNFCR
