Fit note report 'good for disabled employees'
3rd February 2010

A new consultation report paper regarding the government's fit note scheme will open up a more effective dialogue between disabled employees and bosses, it has been claimed.
The document confirmed that the initiative will only allow doctors to deem someone either 'unfit for work' or 'may be fit for some work', whereas before it had been suggested that GPs could certify an individuals as able to return to their job in a full capacity.
Rachel Dineley, head of the diversity and discrimination unit at law firm Beachcroft, said that in making this clarification, those in power have recognised that it is employers and staff members who are in the best position to monitor such decisions.
"It encourages employers to initiate discussions with their employees," she remarked, adding that reasonable adjustments can then be addressed by these two parties.
The system is due to come into effect as of April 6th.
