EHRC launches equality bill consultation

14th January 2010

Business meeting

The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) has launched a consultation to cover three aspects of the equality bill.

According to the body, it will be using its statutory powers to draw up draft regulations for codes of practice relating to employment, equal pay and services, and public functions and associations.

Inviting interested parties to contribute to the process, the EHRC stated that this is a chance for groups to provide "clear and authoritative guidance", so that the potential legislation is comprehensive and fair.

Commenting on the introduction of the bill, the organisation noted: "It will give individuals greater protection from unfair discrimination and will make it easier for employers and companies to understand their responsibilities."

The institution added that it will be "the most significant" document of its kind in recent memory.

Members of parliament began a line by line examination of the equality bill on January 11th, with the second phase of the committee stage taking place yesterday (January 13th).ADNFCR-1716-ID-19558867-ADNFCR
