Bad posture at work 'causing back pain'

23rd November 2009

Maintaining poor posture while using a computer at work could lead to people developing back pain, it has been claimed.

Ergonomist at the Health & Safety Laboratory (HSL) Matt Birtles said that regular exercise and making sure a staff member's display screen equipment is laid out comfortably is the best way to avoid this.

He remarked: "When we assume a compromised posture we have a greater chance of suffering aches and pains."

According to Mr Birtles, problems such as this can get worse and may even become serious if ignored or left untreated.

Small measures such as going over to colleagues to speak to them instead of emailing or phoning can also help, he added.

The HSL last month noted that back pain is the main cause of disability in the UK, with 1.1 million people having the condition.

According to the organisation, it resulted in four million working days being lost in 2007-08.ADNFCR-1716-ID-19473213-ADNFCR
