Equality bill is "essential"

Legislation put forward in the equality bill has been described as "essential" by one expert.

Group director of legal services at the Equality and Human Rights Commission John Wadham said that committing to regulations set out in the documents "will make Britain a fairer place to live".

His remarks come as the bill, which includes laws protecting disabled employees from discrimination in the workplace, is due to be carried over in parliament.

Commenting on the move, he said: "Enough parliamentary time must be given to this bill so that it gets onto the statute books before a general election is called."

According to Mr Wadham, the equality bill and other similar legislative causes are important for building a strong UK economy based on "fairness and respect".

Earlier this year, the Guardian reported statements made by chief executive of charity Radar Liz Sayce that the equality bill may help disabled graduates to secure positions in the workplace.ADNFCR-1716-ID-19467203-ADNFCR
