Employers' Forum on Disability response to research on mental health as it affects employers

13th June 2006

Employers' Forum on Disability (EFD) is extremely pleased that the independent research conducted on behalf of Shaw Trust, Mental Health: the Last Workplace Taboo has given the subject of mental ill-health as it affects employers renewed focus.

For 15 years, EFD has been trying to make it easier for business to employ and retain people with disabilities, including those with mental health problems.

This includes enabling tools for the employer, such as ‘Hot Topic' events on stress and the briefing paper, ‘Employment adjustments for people with mental health problems'.

Chief executive of EFD, Susan Scott-Parker: "The term ‘mental health problems' refers to an extremely broad spectrum of conditions, which can make it difficult for an employer to deal with effectively, in a supportive and non-judgemental way.

"We at EFD believe that many employers are trying hard to get it right on mental health, which can affect anyone at any time.

"Employers' Forum on Disability will continue its efforts to give managers practical guidance relating to the employment of people with mental health problems."

Scott-Parker continues: "We are looking forward to continuing consultation and work with our members and organisation such as Shaw Trust to share best practice on the employment and retention of people with mental health problems."
