Incapacity Benefit reform bill
3rd July 2006
Employers' Forum on Disability (EFD) welcomes the introduction of the Government's welfare reform bill, announced by John Hutton today. (04 July).
However, the reforms - which will see incapacity benefit replaced by employment and support allowance - ignore the role of the employer in getting disabled people into work.
EFD chief executive Susan Scott-Parker says: "We're cautiously pleased about the introduction of the welfare reform bill.
"A bill which aims to get disabled people off benefit and into work is a step in the right direction.
"However, the system must be designed to help employers pull disabled people towards jobs, rather than trying to push them into it.
"Funding must be put in place to develop training programmes so that those on incapacity benefit are attractive to employers."
