Full day masterclass: Mental Health

This is a past event

1st December 2011, 10:00am - 4.00pm, Wellcome Trust, Euston Road, London

Chaired by Rachel E. Perkins, OBE, Mind Champion of the year 2010

Mental health difficulties are common and can affect anyone of any age, gender, ethnicity or social group. Three in ten employees will experience mental health difficulties during the course of a year. However, there is often a lack of understanding around mental ill health and how it relates to the workplace. This can make it hard for line managers to feel confident when dealing with this at work.

At this masterclass Rachel Perkins author of "Realising ambitions: Better employment support for people with a mental health condition" (an independent report to Department for Work and Pensions) will lead an interactive workshop exploring the following questions:

  • What is mental ill health and why does it affect some people and not others?
  • Have mental health issues increased in recent years or do we just understand them better now?
  • What support can you provide for staff with fluctuating mental health conditions, and how do you know when to offer it?
  • How does mental health fit into a sickness absence policy?
  • What are the rules around staff confidentiality; when is it right to disclose?
  • How can you provide return to work support to employees who have been on long term absence due to a mental ill health condition?

Also at the workshop Sharon De Mascia, Centre for Mental Health will deliver a 1 hour 'Impact on Depression' training session, part of the Centre for Mental Health's workplace training programme.

Centre for Mental Health Workplace Training is a proven, work based programme that helps organisations more effectively manage mental health in the workplace and avoid the costs associated with prolonged absences, presenteeism, reduced productivity and replacing / retraining staff.
