After hours: An Equal Britain?
29th September 2010, 6:30pm - 8:30pm, Central London, hosted by BT
From October 2010, Britain will have an all-encompassing Equality Act, 35 years after anti-discrimination legislation was first introduced.
How equal are those protected by the Act?
Is Britain a fairer place now than when the first anti-discrimination legislation was introduced?
Is disability that last taboo in the workplace and in society?
Our 'Question Time' style panel of experts will discuss these questions and more in our next Afterhours event. This is an exciting opportunity to hear representatives from other strands of diversity discuss and debate how equal British society is, the role of the Equality Act and how it relates to:
-
Disability,
-
Race,
-
Gender,
-
Age,
-
Religion and belief, and
-
Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people.
We encourage you to get involved in the debate and ask any questions you may have - this is your opportunity to have your voice and opinions heard! Submit your questions in advance to the Training & Events team (events@efd.org.uk)and we can make sure your queries and views are addressed by the panel.
Speakers
James Partridge, Director of Changing Faces and Employers' Forum on Disability (EFD) associate will chair this event. James was recently seen as a guest newsreader for Channel 5 News and has the distinction of being the first and (at the moment) only person with a facial disfigurement to read news headlines for a national news programme.
Our panel of equality & diversity experts are:
-
Dr Roger Berry,
-
Gary Campkin, Head of Employment and Human Rights, CBI,
-
Denise Keating, Chief Executive, Employers' Forum on Age and Belief,
-
Julie Jaye Charles,
-
Mike Smith, Equality and Human Rights Commission,
-
Amanda Ariss, Chief Executive, Equality and Diversity Forum.
Who should attend?
We encourage anyone to attend who is passionate and opinionated about equality, diversity, disability and the Equality Act and a fairer Britain.
