Regional event: Wales - non-visible disabilities FREE to members!
14th April 2010, 10:00am - 4:00pm, Cardiff
Following the success of the latest addition to the Employers' Forum on Disability (EFD) Line Manager Guide series, we are pleased to announce our latest Wales Forum will focus on non-visible disabilities.
Many people think of disabled people as being wheelchair users. However, the term 'disabled people' covers a wide range of different people with different impairments, which may or may not affect how they do their job. The legal definition of 'disability' is so wide that people you might not regard as disabled, or indeed do not themselves think of as disabled, are protected. That includes people whose disabilities are not obvious.
Why attend?
This event will make it easier for you to make reasonable adjustments for people who work for you who have disabilities that are not obvious. It will help you to:
- Understand what non-visible disabilities and reasonable adjustments are.
- Identify how work can be done differently to maximise the potential of your disabled and non-disabled staff, i.e. make reasonable adjustments.
- Recognise the signs that indicate that people who work for you might need to do their work differently because they have a non-visible disability.
- Learn how to respond when an employee tells you they have a disability.
- Make sure you do not break the law.
- Know where to go for more help and advice.
An update on the law will be provided by Leanne Sokolski, Solicitor, Eversheds. Case studies and guest speakers include Brendan Roach, Disability Directions Advisor from EFD, Margaret Waller, Employee Relations Manager from Dyfed Powys Police and Alison Pennycook, Diversity Manager from the Environment Agency.
