Afterhours: Getting the best from disabled employees; new recruits, potential leaders

This is a past event

15th April 2010, 6:00pm - 8.30pm, Central London

  • Are there still barriers at entry level for disabled people in gaining meaningful employment?
  • Why should we have specific development programmes for disabled employees?
  • What kind of adjustments could be given for training and development opportunities?

Disabled people earn less than any other group and are likely to have lower levels of job satisfaction. Disabled people are also more likely to experience home life and cultural barriers that affect 'fitting in' to work cultures that may effect their career development. Results from the Disability Standard 2009 show that 90% of participants offer adjustments at every stage of the recruitment process, but:

  • Only 39% require everyone involved with recruitment and selection to attend disability equality training.
  • Only 11% monitor the proportion of employees gaining promotion who declare a disability.
  • Only 35% check the format of training programmes to remove barriers.

With the help of organisations such as Remploy, who are sponsoring this event, employers are doing better at employing numbers of disabled employees and providing adjustments at interview.

Speakers and delegates at this Afterhours event will debate:

  • What barriers still exist for the promotion prospects of disabled people;
  • What unique skills disabled talent can bring to your organisation; and
  • What recruiting and developing disabled talent has to do with increasing profits.

Speakers:

Following a panel debate format, this event will be chaired by Kate Nash OBE, Director Kate Nash Associates and EFD Associate.

Remploy will be represented by Tim Massey, Director of accounts. Speakers from EFD member organisations will be confirmed soon!

Who should attend?

Policy makers, senior managers, HR managers and anyone with an interest in organisational development.

This event is free for members.  Non members please contact EFD for further details.

"Just a note to say how much I enjoyed the meeting last week.  I think that the panel members gave very interesting accounts of their experiences.  I particularly enjoyed the tale by Peter Mackenzie Smith and the DRO going round his factory and spotting employment opportunities as it was a DRO who put me into my career.
