Workshop: Police and Law Enforcement Network (PLEN) Workshop

28th November 2008, 10.00am - 3.30pm, West Midlands Past event

This bi-annual event is exclusively for EFD’s Police and LawEnforcement (PLEN) members. It brings together police forces and law enforcement agencies from across the UK to network and share good practice on disability.

It will focus on how PLEN members improve service delivery for all and consider the different needs of members of the public with disabilities.

Richard Dixon, the PLEN Coordinator, has found good practice in many forces, particularly employment practices. PLEN members are concerned that the law enforcement community does not have a consistent approach in the way it provides services to disabled people.

Due to member demand, we will also be focusing on disability hate crime. We will be bringing together experts to:

  • Get a better understanding of the practical policing issues, and
  • Learn how to deal with disability hate crime, including respecting the rights of disabled victims of crime.

Speakers include:

  • Case study from Cleveland Police.
  • Anna Bird, Policy & Campaigns Manager (Social Inclusion and Rights), Mind.
  • Phil Friend, Director, Minty & Friend Ltd.
  • Caroline Gooding, EFD associate and legal expert.
  • Bernie Moylan, Autism West Midlands.
  • Nadine Tilbury, Senior Policy Adviser, Crown Prosecution Service.

Why attend?

This workshop will enable delegates to:

  • Get an update on the law and any specific changes, particularly service delivery and PLEN’s obligations under the Disability Equality Duty.
  • Share best practice on what needs to be done around working with disabled people; as members of the community, when making arrests, in custody, interviewing etc.
  • Focus on disability hate crime and other types of hate crime - and understanding the fine line between a hate incident and hate crime.
  • Learn about the application of hate crime legislation and the Crown Prosecution Service’s perspective.
  • Work with disabled stakeholders to improve the service of police and law enforcement agencies across the UK.
  • Learn from the experience of other organisations, share best practice and network with other PLEN members.
  • Get support from EFD and find out how we can help you.

Who should attend?

All PLEN members, specifically for colleagues responsible for service delivery, including law enforcement training managers and front line staff.
